The Legacy of Francisco de Albear
The award is named after Francisco de Albear, the 19th-century Cuban-born civil engineer whose work became a model for the profession in Cuba. His colleagues and fellow scientists regarded him as a wise and accomplished engineer.
His legacy includes the Havana Water Works, known as the Acueducto de Albear, as well as bridges, roadways, and other projects of national importance. His early work included mapping Cuba's principal ports and designing and constructing irrigation canals.
The award honors his legacy by recognizing civil engineers whose careers demonstrate enduring service, professional excellence, and contributions to the advancement of civil engineering.
